If you feel like going up through magical forest and beautiful valleys to the top of this 2088m summit with 360 degree views, try hiking Cerro Chall-Huaco.
It is a moderate hike in which there are no technical difficulties. It only takes a good physical condition and feel like walking and having a great day. The first part we follow the signed trail south west as it gently ascends through lenga forest, past the ‘Laguna de los Patos’. It gets slightly steeper as it exits the forest and out onto the open mountain side at 1600 m above sea level. From here the environment changes to a High Andean Steppe, an interesting transition zone between the humid Andean forest and the Patagonian steppe, characterized by small shrubs (under snow in winter time), adapted to the low temperatures, winds, rocky soil and low rainfall. We continue following the cairns and markers up the ridge to the summit. Near the summit the markers are a little indistinct but the route to the summit is obvious. From the top the views Patagonian steppe area, and the “Precordillera Mountains” are magnificent.
